Out of Africa

This is my first post on my brand new blog and to break it in I thought I should give you the low down on the in thing right now.

One of my favourite trends that everyone is rocking right now is the Tribe print or Afrocentric look, think This Is Africa (TIA). These are looks or print clothing derived from African culture or Africa itself. Fashion is no stranger to throwback trends, and the core of this trend isn’t anything new in fact I remember living in Durban as a child and having traditional ceremonies or "imcimbi", as they are formally called, at my Granddad’s house and everyone would dress in their best Cultural attire to suit the occasion. However back then I would have never thought fashion would give it a face lift and make it look so twenty-something & totally trendy. Then again back then you didn’t have the fashion forward celebrities like Solange Knowles, The Kardashian sisters, Blake Lively and Beyoncé jumping onto the band wagon and making Afrocentricity cool. But here we are in 2012 and this is the trend to be seen in.

TIA trend has been made into the coolest contemporary pieces: such as skirts, scarves, pants, tops, blazers and well everything really. Designer labels such as Etro, Hugo Boss and Lamb by Gwen Stefani have used the TIA look as a go-to for the runway and most recently the Burberry Resort 2012 collection boasted the brightest of tribal prints, in an array of coats, skirts, jerseys and shirts have the whole world saying, "Yes, please!" J.

I was pretty excited to see how South Africa, has interpreted the TIA look in every-day streetwear. So I took to the streets of Cape Town eyes on the prowl for everything that screamed "This Is Africa!", it wasn’t necessarily about the TIA piece itself, when capturing, but more about how it was paired.

LAST STOP: OLD BISCUIT MILL (OBSERVATORY)...

And as I predicted OBM didn’t disappoint…at all!!

So what have we learnt? TRIBE PRINT is in. Take a risk with your look. So whether you print-block your African-inspired piece or you wear it under an edgy cool blazer or on a jersey, just “Afrocentrinize” your look because nothing says trendy this season like a tribe print. #thatsall
